We Americans internalize the information we receive from sources we have come to trust. Once inside us, they form a perception that resits logical argument and appeals to rational thought. Once we are told enough that Islam is a threat, we begin to act in ways that alienates practitioners of the religion. Alienation leads to misunderstanding. Misunderstanding leads to conflict. Conflict leads to hatred. Islam as a threat becomes the self-fulfilling prophesy. It is the same vicious cycle that we have endured within racial debates; the same cycle we endured with the million of illegal immigrants from Ireland, Eastern Europe, and Italy after the turn of the 20th Century; the same cycle we endure with today's immigration debate. If we continue to allow such a disproportionate number of poor and minority citizens to be locked up, released without rehabilitation, and locked up again, modern slavery will continue to thrive. Corporations will continue to exploit and use men and women who are guilty of non-violent and largely drug-related crimes to further their profits which will further their control and influence over our democracy. It's not only the fact that the right has selective memory on this issue and is defending racist and reactionary legislation in Arizona, it's the fact that they refuse to engage in any real discussion of how we can actually address immigration reform in a realistic manner. Businesses are going to continue to hire illegals and illegals are going to continue to come across the border illegally in order to escape poverty and provide for their family.
