The one thing that is certain about the 2010 mid-term elections is that turnout will mean everything. If the standard model applies, then the GOP will approach a retake of the House and cut the Democrats close to 50 seats in the Senate. If the Democrats are somehow able to get Obama voters back to the polls, then progressives will have a chance to see what the party can do with a solid and loyal House majority, and more than 60 in the Senate. We Americans internalize the information we receive from sources we have come to trust. Once inside us, they form a perception that resits logical argument and appeals to rational thought. Once we are told enough that Islam is a threat, we begin to act in ways that alienates practitioners of the religion. Alienation leads to misunderstanding. Misunderstanding leads to conflict. Conflict leads to hatred. Islam as a threat becomes the self-fulfilling prophesy. It is the same vicious cycle that we have endured within racial debates; the same cycle we endured with the million of illegal immigrants from Ireland, Eastern Europe, and Italy after the turn of the 20th Century; the same cycle we endure with today's immigration debate. The Conservative Mainstream Media

The results of this decades long effort are plain to see; the major media outlets now bend over backward to find and show "both sides" of every story. The problem is that stories don't have sides, they have a set of facts and a context. Journalists are tasked with reporting the facts, and the context, and are protected in this venture by the First Amendment. In the last two years, major media outlets have worked overtime presenting the "conservative point of view" on the birther movement, death panels, health care polling, the response to the Big Spill, and the estate tax.
