Faith and Values

Faith and Values

Jeri says, "I came to the conclusion that there must be something about religious faith which renders people stupid." This was an observation regarding the 2004 U.S. presidential election that you might recall re-elected George W. Bush. Maybe it's the "warning" or maybe it's the "stupid" that did it, but it has inflamed tempers. Imagine that! [Read the rest of this article...]

The Terroir of Tempranillo (El Terruño de Tempranillo)

The Terroir of Tempranillo (El Terruño de Tempranillo)

Despite the fact that most wine drinkers can only name two or three wines by variety, tempranillo and rioja are such catchy words that they are easily remembered by those who try the wines, especially when they taste the fresh, fruit-forward, sunny and sometimes spicy Rioja wines made with this grape and find that the first sip demands a second, and then many more -- don’t even get me started on how well wines made with tempranillo pair while munching tapas! A Guard(ian) Angell: Part One

A Guard(ian) Angell: Part One

I recently sat down with Major Cory Angell, Public Affairs Officer of the Pennsylvania National Guard to discuss not only his past and current role in the Guard, but also to gain some unique and firsthand insight into the role that the National Guard is playing in Iraq and Afghanistan. As the Public Affairs Officer for the PA Guard, Major Angell is ultimately the one that the media turns to for insights, sound bytes and details for anything related to the Guard and what they are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan. We Must Extend the Bush Tax Cuts!

We Must Extend the Bush Tax Cuts!

Balls receives thousands of letters each day from concerned citizens across this great country of ours. Why is the unemployment rate still hovering around ten percent, you query? Why does my quarterly 401(k) statement make me weep uncontrollably, you ponder? Why can’t I pry my thirty year old son from the couch in my basement, you snivel? These questions all have a common answer, my friends: We must extend the Bush tax cuts! [Read the rest of this article...]

Blame Obama

Blame Obama

The American Tea Party is mad as hell, and they aren't going to take it anymore! I get that; rage I understand. What I am left to figure out is what in the hell they are mad about? Were these folks angry in 2005, 2006, 2007, or 2008? Have they just reached their boiling points now? Or is the President doing something to our nation that forms a legitimate gripe? The secret to the answer to that question, in my humble opinion, lies in the timing of the Tea Party outrage. [Read the rest of this article...]

Financial Reform: Wall Street Wins Again

Financial Reform: Wall Street Wins Again

It is expected that President Obama will sign into law the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act this week. In what his administration will surely proclaim as a victory for Main Street, and the right-wing pundits and media will construe as an affront to capitalism in the omnipresent game of disinformation and propaganda; the only victor will be the Corporate system that dictates our Democracy and wreaks havoc on Global Markets for the sake of more and more profit to the detriment of the earth's inhabitants. Words: Yah, But They Vas Bahd

Words: Yah, But They Vas Bahd

George Carlin started the whole thing with his infamous Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television in 1972. Of course, some DJ at WBAI-FM in California, it’s always a radio DJ and it’s always in California, aired the uncensored version of the bit. A man driving his car with his son was listening in mid-afternoon, was offended, [Read the rest of this article...]

American Guns

American Guns

At this time of historic freedom to keep and bear arms, the rights secured and protected are not, apparently, good enough. Armed marches have become, almost, a political fad. If you live in Louisiana, you can thank God, literally, for the right to carry firearms in Church. The aim here is very clear. The gun lobby wants the 2nd Amendment to define the only American right not subject to modification. They have even objected to banning firearms sales to individuals that America's anti-terrorism folks consider a danger to our nation. Over a six year period, 91% of individuals on the terrorist watch list who applied for permits to buy guns were approved. Why not, I guess; guns don't kill people, airplanes flown into buildings kill people. What [Read the rest of this article...]

Bits and Pieces

Bits and Pieces

A little old lady was leisurely walking through a farmer’s market on a bright, sunny Saturday morning, wearing a baseball cap with ANNA MARIA ISLAND written on the front in bold, capital letters. As she approached one of the vegetable stands, the vendor asked her, “Hi. So where is Anna Maria Island?” Excitedly she replied, “Are you kidding? [Read the rest of this article...]
